How Long Does It Take to Clone a Dog? Timeline from Biopsy to Puppy

Cloning a beloved dog is truly a remarkable blend of science, love, and patience. At MyFriendAgain, one of the most common questions we hear is:
“How long does it actually take to clone my dog?”

The answer? It typically takes 6 to 12 months from the initial cell biopsy to welcoming your cloned puppy home — yet every stage plays a critical role.

Therefore, below, we break down the full timeline so you know exactly what to expect.

Step 1: Biopsy & Cell Preservation (1–3 Days)

To begin with, we collect viable living cells from your dog through a simple, minimally invasive skin biopsy. Ideally, this step happens while your dog is still healthy and alive; however, sometimes we can perform it shortly after passing, provided it occurs quickly (usually within 5 days).

Duration: 1–3 days

What happens: A veterinarian takes a small tissue sample and immediately sends it to our preservation lab.

Importantly, we store these cells via cryogenic preservation, so even if you’re not ready to clone now, you can preserve the option for the future.

Step 2: Cell Culturing & Genetic Preparation (2–4 Weeks)

Once we receive your dog’s tissue sample, our scientists isolate the skin cells and begin the culturing process. During this time, they multiply these cells in the lab to ensure a healthy and abundant supply of DNA.

Duration: 2 to 4 weeks

What happens: Your dog’s cells are nurtured, grown, and tested for cloning suitability.

Step 3: Cloning Process Begins (1–2 Months)

Following successful cell culturing, the cloning process officially starts. Our scientists insert your dog’s DNA into an enucleated egg (one with its original DNA removed). Then, they stimulate the egg to develop into an embryo and implant it into a surrogate mother dog.

Duration: 1 to 2 months (depending on how many embryo transfers we perform)

What happens: We closely monitor surrogates for pregnancy and embryo success, actively tracking every stage.

Step 4: Pregnancy & Puppy Development (Approximately 2 Months)

Once the surrogate is confirmed pregnant, she carries the cloned puppy for a typical 63 days—just like any dog pregnancy.

Duration: 2 months

What happens: We provide veterinary care and continuous monitoring to ensure a healthy pregnancy and safe delivery.

Step 5: Puppy Growth & Health Monitoring (6–8 Weeks Post-Birth)

After birth, we observe, vaccinate, and check the cloned puppies for health and genetic integrity. Our team makes sure they are strong, thriving, and ready for a forever home.

Duration: 6 to 8 weeks

What happens: Puppies nurse with the surrogate and receive early veterinary care before we send them home.

Final Step: Your Puppy Comes Home (Total: 6–12 Months)

From the initial biopsy to the moment you welcome your cloned puppy into your arms, the full process typically takes between 6 and 12 months.

However, because cloning involves nature, science, and biology, slight variations in timing may occur due to factors such as:

  • Embryo transfer success rate

  • Surrogate cycle timing

  • Health and readiness of the puppy
